The media and the riots

The report of the Media and the Riots conference last November is published, after months of hard work, on Monday 6 August, the first anniversary of the Tottenham disturbances.

Media and the Riots - A Call For Action is the first report to examine the relationship between mainstream media and communities affected by the disturbances in English cities in the summer of 2011. It also looks at the role of social media and citizen journalism.

The comprehensive report, written by University of Leicester social scientist Dr Leah Bassel, comes from a conference in the UK held last November which was unique because it brought young people and community members living in riot-affected areas face-to-face with media representatives, including journalists. Its conclusions and recommendations are intended to "pave the way for much better future news reporting". Featuring a foreword by Roy Greenslade, it is published by the Citizen Journalism Educational Trust and The-Latest.Com.
