Party on!

FREELANCES are frequently ignored or overlooked when the media outlets for whom we work send out invites to their corporate Christmas do. So LFB's own annual end-of-year seasonal festive get-together was for many of us a much-needed occasion to break of the isolation we often encounter, catch up with other freelances and get to know some new faces as well.

The party in early December was in the excellent surroundings of the hall of St Anne's Church, Dean Street, in the heart of Soho. (The church has openly served Soho's LGBTQ community since the days when to do that was still frowned upon, while its vicar in the 1960s and 1970s was an instigator of the Centrepoint homelessness charity.)

This year, LFB extended invitations to its party to other London NUJ Branches, including New Media, Books and Magazines and London Central. Thanks to attendees who contributed to the Rate for the Job sheet that the Freelance team circulated during the party.

As ever, free food and free drink was laid on, thanks to the diligence of the LFB Committee sub-group The Sandwich Committee, which handled the catering ,food preparation and suitably seasonal decorations including inflatable snowmen, an inflatable reindeer and inflatable Santa.

Branch business was kept to an absolute minimum, with the election of new members, some of whom were in attendence, as well as brief and timely tax warning.

Thanks also to members who turned up early to help set up, and to those party-goers who spontaneously volunteered to help clean up, load and empty the dishwasher, stack crockery and sweep the floor at the end. We had the to go on for slightly longer than our meetings usually do, while its excellent location lent itself to "pub afterwards" gatherings in nearby Soho watering holes.
