Training alert

NUJ PROFESSIONAL Training have online courses in July for freelances. First Steps in Freelancing is on Friday 17 July and Winning and Negotiating Freelance Work is on Friday 31 July.

The First Steps course normally costs £40 for NUJ members and Winning £50. In the light of how skint a lot of our members are in these unprecedented times, however, London Freelance Branch has voted to subsidise these courses for its members. LFB members enjoy a discount - both courses at £25 each. Claim your discount here.

As ever, FEU Training, of which the NUJ is a part, offers numerous excellent online training in "the business side" of freelancing, on everything from using Instagram to promote yourself to finances for freelances in uncertain times. Some are Lockdown Learning courses in partnership with the BBC.

All FEU courses are FREE to NUJ members: they're listed here. You'll need your NUJ membership number, which is on your Press Card or Membership Card, and to register for a password for the members' area of the NUJ website to log in. Call the NUJ's Membership Department if you're unsure of how to reset or obtain a password. Feedback from LFB members who've been on these FEU courses is that they are very good indeed.

NUJ Training Scotland has Zoom-based online courses including Writing for the Web on Friday 31 July and every Friday throughout August. Details are here.

NUJ Training Cymru/Wales courses are now available to those all over the UK via Zoom. These include Shoot and Edit on iPad and iPhone on Wednesday 15 July. Those resident outside Wales pay £75, for NUJ members in Wales it's £35.

Jenny Sims of the NUJ Welsh Executive Council reports that a Cardiff-based member who went on a recent video course was able to get paid work making videos for a client immediately after the course as a result of going on it.

This summer's Centre for Investigative Journalism online training courses are regrettably all sold out.
