They must put it in writing

CONTRACTS can be confusing - and those who hire or engage journalists sometimes think it worth paying people to make them more so. So the Freelance would appreciate reports of how a recent small change to the law has affected sthis.

Since 6 April 2020, employers must give employees and workers a document stating the main conditions of employment when they start work. This implements one small recommendation of the underwhelming Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices.

An important point for the Freelance is that that "and workers" means that a freelance engaged to work a shift should get such a statement. This should set out, for example, how you will be paid for the time off that you are entitled to. But will it? Send examples - strictly anonymously - to inwriting@londonfreelance.org, please.
