NUJ charity is ready to help

THE NUJ'S CHARITY, NUJ Extra, exists to support members in financial need. The Trustees last week discussed support for those affected by the pandemic. UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak recently announced new worker furlough and self-employed support schemes that will run until the end of March, but government prevaricated on this policy shift until many firms had already made workers redundant. The trustees we must assume that significant numbers of NUJ members will be struggling still, or will be in the near future.

Trustee Francis Sedgemore writes: "for that reason NUJ Extra is starting a new scheme, covering the five months from November to March. It invites applications, both new and from those who benefited in the first round. Applications will be assessed on the basis of current circumstances alone."

NUJ Extra has spent less in covid-19 support than expected in a worst-case scenario, and the stock market has rallied a little since the huge falls in the spring and summer. With generous donations from branches and individual members, NUJ Extra is in a fairly healthy state, and ready to provide further support for those in need.

Members who need to apply should in the first instance contact their Branch Welfare Officer.

  • London Freelance Branch voted in January to donate £100 per month to NUJ Extra from its management fund - which receives a proportion of members' NUJ subscriptions. In May it voted that while it cannot hold face-to-face meetings it will donate an additional £450 per month - the sum that in normal times it would spend on such meetings.
