NUJ gets newsgatherers exempt from quarantine on returning to UK

AFTER INTENSE lobbying by General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet and NUJ colleagues, the NUJ has secured exemption for newsgatherers from UK quarantine rules. Precisely, "journalists travelling in the course of their work as newsgatherers will be exempted from quarantine regulations from 4am on Saturday 5 December." So you won't have to self-isolate in the UK on returning from work elsewhere. The measures will also apply to journalists travelling to the UK from abroad and who hold an IFJ press card.

Discussion among members of the NUJ's Freelance Industrial Council leads the Freelance to remind you that you also need to convince the authorities in the places you're travelling to. Consider applying for am International Press Card - NUJ members can log in and do that here.

It's also a good idea to go old-school and carry paper copies of letters commissioning you.

In France, for example, you will need to have a signed attestation saying why they are out and about. You can do this on a phone using the TousAntiCovid app (get it for Android and Mac). Members planning to travel to France may want to contact Paris Branch - care of the Freelance if necessary.

The Netherlands Union of Journalists (NVJ) has negotiated a similar exemption for IFJ press card holders. The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) is campaigning for journalists to be recognised as essential workers throughout the continent.
