NUJ General Secretary election

IT'S TIME for the National Union of Journalists to elect a General Secretary.

The current NUJ General Secretary, Michelle Stanistreet, is now in the last year of her five-year term of office and is therefore subject to re-election.

Ballot papers for the General Secretary election will go out to members on 7 June and need to be filled in and posted to arrive by 28 June.

To stand as a candidate, you will need to have been a member for five years, be up to date on your Union contributions and have held some kind of NUJ post (this could include as a Branch officer) for at least three years. Shortlisted candidates for General Secretary must also be able to evidence that they "have the skills necessary to perform the duties of the General Secretary to required standards".

Once the pandemic lifts, the General Secretary post will be full-time again - the Union is currently operating a four-day working week as an emergency pandemic measure until September - and based at the NUJ HQ in Headland House. So they'll need to commit to living in London or relocating to within a reasonable travelling distance of London.

Those full members who meet the above criteria and are considering standing for election as the next General Secretary should contact Lorna James, NUJ Head of Personnel & Administration, for an application pack, via personnel@nuj.org.uk. The pack will need to be completed and sent to arrive by 3 May.
