Training alert

THE EXCELLENT Zoom talk by data journalist Pamela Duncan at February's branch meeting may well have whetted appetites to learn more about date-driven investigations. If so, look no further. The Centre for Investigative Journalism is running a course which offers a good starting point for those not used to finding stories in datasets. It runs over four consecutive days from 29 March in one-and-a-half-hour chunks.

Delivered by Zoom, it is led by Jonathan Stoneman, a seasoned journalist and former head of training at the BBC World Service. It is very hands-on with screen shares and high levels of participation among a maximum of twelve participants. It has had very good feedback.

Those who attend will learn what data is available and how to find it, how to interrogate it and find facts or patterns in it which will lead, inform and enhance the stories they tell. Those who should attend all four sessions. Book here: Finding Stories with Data.

Work safely at home

The Branch is organising a free webinar on working safely from home through the pandemic on Monday 22 March from 6pm to 7:30pm. See here for details.

First steps, and negotiating

NUJ head office has commissioned First steps in freelancing on 7 May and Winning and negotiating freelance work on 21 May. Email to book a place.

NUJ Training Wales is offering Survive and Thrive as a freelancer on 16 March and it costs £25 for NUJ members from outside Wales. Details of this and other courses are on the NUJ Cymru/Wales Training website.

This is the last month in which members can benefit from free courses from the Federation of Entertainment Unions – which includes the NUJ. Just as more people need to get skilled up in the pandemic fall-out, the government is scrapping the Union Learning Fund at the end of the month. Which means no more free training courses for our precarious cash-strapped creatives...

Sessions yet to run are Blogging for creative freelancers on 10 March from 10:30am to 4pm; Build New Revenue Streams on 16 March from 10:30am to 4pm; How to Create promo videos for social media on 24 March from 10:30am to 3pm and a webinar on building confidence on 26 March from 11am to 12:30pm. You need to register to enrol: details on the FEU website. And it is not too late to sign the petition protesting the cut.

What do you want and need?

The promised branch Training Survey will be out very soon – please fill it in. We don't want to promise what we can't deliver. We are not the union's training department and cannot please everyone. But it is important to see what our freelance members want and how much they are prepared to pay for it. Meanwhile, happy upskilling...
