Claudia Jones Memorial Lecture 2021
The NUJ's Claudia Jones Memorial Lecture will be delivered online by Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff on Thursday 2 December at 7:30pm.
The lecture is organised by the NUJ's Black Members' Council. This year's lecturer is currently a Senior Staff Editor at the New York Times working across Narrative Projects and Black History, Continued. She was formerly Editor-in-Chief at gal-dem magazine and a weekend editor at Dazed magazine. One of her first jobs was editing a property supplement at the Hampstead & Hightate Express.
The annual lecture remembers Claudia Jones, the pioneering radical Trinidadian journalist who moved to New York in the 1920s, where she reported on poverty and discrimination, before being deported for her Young Communist League activities. She received asylum in the UK, founded the West Indian Gazette in London and was instrumental in founding the Notting Hill Carnival. Claudia is buried next to Karl Marx in Highgate Cemetery.
