In Belarus, 32 journalists will spend New Year’s Eve in prison

THE BELARUSIAN Association of Journalists has produced a record of arrests and imprisonments of journalists in that country. This is despite the Supreme Court ordering the Association's liquidation on 27 August.

In the course of the year, 113 detentions of journalists were recorded; there were 29 cases of journalists subject to "administrative arrests"; and journalists spent more than 8733 days behind bars.

BAJ tally of arrests

European Federation of Journalists EFJ) General Secretary Ricardo Gutiérrez said in a statement:

As we have been asking for almost 5 years, we call on the Council of Europe to include Belarus in the Platform for the Protection of Journalism and the Safety of Journalists, in order to give full visibility to the ongoing repression and to hold the perpetrators accountable. We must act now!
