LFB Chair returns to role after 34-year absence

THE MARCH LFB meeting saw the election of Tim Gopsill as Branch Chair. Tim was last Branch Chair back in the 1980s, 34 years ago, when he stood down to become editor of the NUJ magazine the Journalist for 21 years.

At the March meeting, Tim said he'd really like to turn the LFB Chair post into a job share if anyone wants to "get involved in the process" and share the post with him.

He also gave thanks on behalf of LFB to the previous co-chairs Matt Salusbury and Mel Lambert, and to Vice-Chair Deborah Hobson - who was acting Branch Chair for the February meeting and the start of the March meeting. There is a team of members of the Committee who are "willing to step in and chair meetings" should both Tim and our Vice-Chair Deborah ever be unavailable on the evening of any given second Monday of the month.

Also in the March meeting, Deborah was nominated by the Branch as a candidate for a vacant NUJ Freelance Industrial Council seat representing members in London. We nominated Francis Sedgemore (formerly of LFB but now with Leeds Branch) as LFB's candidate for the NUJ's Ethics Council. There remain other vacancies on various NUJ Councils and Committees that have still not been filled: see here for details.

There are also vacancies on the LFB Committee for at least one Negotiations Officer and for a Member without Portfolio to take on projects as they arise. There is a vacancy for one or more student members to stand to be a Student Representative - an observer on LFB Committee championing the interests of the many journalism students who belong to the Branch.

Job-shares are possible and are indeed encouraged in all these vacant posts. For more detail on what these jobs entail, see here. Contact a member of the LFB Committee if you are interested in standing for any of these posts.
